The 2007 Junior World Wrestling Championships opened at the China Agricultural University Gymnasium on August 21, with the participation of some 600 wrestlers from 60 countries and regions in the 50kg, 60kg, 74kg and 96kg elimination rounds. As a result, many top wrestlers who achieved good results at last year's junior worlds were upset.
In the elimination rounds of the four weight categories in the men's Greco-Roman wrestling this morning, Oleg Kryoka of Ukraine and Nurmakhan Tinaliyev of Kazakhstan, silver and bronze medalists of the 96kg Greco-Roman wrestling at the 2006 Junior World Wrestling Championships, were both knocked out by their respective opponents; Han-Soo Ryu, last year's bronze medalist in the 60kg Greco-Roman wrestling from Korea, was even eliminated out in the first round. In sharp contrast, Turkish, Iranian and Azerbaijan wrestlers performed exceptionally well, with two wrestlers of each team qualifying for the finals. As last year's runners-up of the team event, the Turkish team showed its prowess once again.
As the reigning team champions, Russia fielded four wrestlers in all the four events. As a result, only Lbragim Labazanov entered the 60kg final tonight. Host China fielded three wrestlers, namely Xiao Bo, Xin Xiaowei and Nie Xiaoming, in the 60kg, 74kg and 96kg classes respectively and it turned out that none of the them succeeded in making the finals.
In the Greco-Roman wrestling 50kg class, Gadir Suleymannov of Azerbaijan outdid his Kazakhstani counterpart in the first round to meet the stronger Vasiliy Topev from Russia in the semifinals. In the competition, Vasiliy Topev caused Gadir Suleymannov much trouble but failed to stop him from advancing to the next round.
Pitted against Gadir Suleymannov in the final was Reza Asadpour from Iran, who had shown his great strength all the way to the final and losing only one point to a Kyrgyzstanian wrestler in the quarterfinals.
The 60kg final will be contested between Russia's Lbragim Labazanov and Turkey's Rahman Bilici.
China's Xiao Bo was knocked out by a Japanese opponent in a quarterfinal bout.
The competition in the 74kg event turned out to be more intense, with Azerbaijan's Robert Pap and Armenia'a Arsen Julfalakyan making the finals after close fights with their respectively rivals in the semifinals.
The final in the 96kg class will be between Turkye's Ahmet and Iran's Davod. All four gold medals of the Greco-Roman wrestling of this tournament will find their owners this evening.
All those who lost to the finalists in the first round or were eliminated in the semifinals may enter the revival. Both winners from the two revival bouts will be awarded a bronze medal. |
